June treats: latest discoveries, handpicked new releases & mixtapes

With the quantity of good music coming through these days it’s extremely easy to miss some of the best tunes that have been put out there. We’d like to maintain the habit of doing a little round up at the end of each month just to try and prevent this from happening, so let’s appreciate June together with another ByBase selection of hot new releases, fresh mixtapes and special treats.

JUNE RELEASES

Summer has arrived, the days are long and the festival season is officially kicking in. This months selection is featuring picks from G.O.O.D. Music’s rich heavy-hitting streak, such as Kanye’s 8th studio album ‘Ye’ & ‘Kids See Ghosts’ collabo album with Kid Cudi, Nas’s first album out after 6-year break & Teyana Taylor. Kanye is reportedly contemplating crafting 52 albums over 52-week time-span on his label so let’s see where that goes. Another beautiful project  is Black Thought‘s Streams of Thought stunning collabo EP with 9th Wonder and The Midnight Hour album wonderfully crafted debut project by the duo consisting of ATCQ’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad & Adrien Younge featuring a reimagination of Luther Vandross’ song and appearances by Cee Lo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Bilal, Marsha Ambrosius, Questlove and others.   On top of that you’ll hear stand-out singles by Prince’s bass player MonoNeon, Brasstracks vibrant feat with Xavier Omar, Tyler The Creator, Redman, VanJess, Georgia Anne Muldrow, some picks from the latest Gorillaz release, Freddie Gibbs charizmatic trap-savvy 10-track project, the unexpected world-stopping Carters album and much more. Everything is Love.

Treat of the month for jazz music fiends is Kamasi Washington’s Heaven and Earth release, new musical movement and jazz superensemble R+R=NOW consisting of Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah injecting a fresh fusion of traditional jazz, R&B, and hip-hop into the scene and most importantly, John Coltrane’s Lost Album from 1963. Who would’ve thought we’d be listening to new music from this musical genius in 2018. Madness.

JUNE IN THE MIX

It’s only fair to say that well-put-together DJ sets play a critical role in making sense of the music that’s available out there. Finding connections between the present and the past, taking us on a journey through the known & unknown, often offering a brand new perspective and inspiration. This month there have been a couple of new ones that stuck with us.

Eden Hagos – A s m a r a

Eritrean-American DJ, producer and all-round creative Eden Hagos brings visibility to those sounds that you can’t quite put your genre finger on. The Prophet of future sounds’ as she’s been deemed has published another flavorful mixtape consisting of samples/beats/tunes that she grew up with, was influenced by and just vibes to now.

SPECIAL TREAT

NPR truly never disappoints with bringing the best artists to their headquarter offices in Washington. This Tiny Desk Concert with Daniel Ceasar is a definition of purity in music that will leave you smiling & feeling like after a loving, 15-minute lasting hug from the inside. Featuring rich harmonies, three of the most streamed tracks of his and the guest appearance of H.E.R. on the ‘Best Part’ track is simply a cherry on top all of that. Pop it on and vibe out.
